BRIEFS Saints edge Catawba, 10-9 Catawba battled No. 5 Limestone down to the final seconds, but the visiting Saints came away with a 10-9 win in men's lacrosse action on Saturday night at Shuford Stadium. Limestone improves to 12-1. After a scoreless first quarter, senior Kurt Green scored just over a minute into the second quarter to give Catawba the early lead. A goal by Mike Poerstel with 2:24 left before the half gave Limestone at 4-3 lead at the break. Summer hoop league registration continues Registration is continuing at SageSport, the Boys and Girls Club and the Recreation District for the Cherokee County Summer Youth Basketball League. Contact Shane at 704-445-8566 or Barry at 704-445-6553. Lady Saints top Seton Hill The No. 2 Limestone College women's lacrosse team defeated Seton Hill 22-1 on Sunday afternoon. The Lady Saints set a new program record for most wins in a season with Sunday's victory with 17. Kelly Lickert led Limestone with eight points with three goals and five assists. Melissa Howard had seven points, including one goal and six assists. Lauryn Wise tallied four goals. Eleven more players scored in the victory. Lady Saint goalkeeper Erin Cavanaugh had three saves in the first half. The NCAA Division II tournament selection show will be broadcast on CSTV on Sunday, May 4, at 9 p.m. GHS track star inks with Limestone Gaffney High track star Shamaka Adams is among four student-athletes to sign with Limestone College. Adams runs the 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters, 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 meter relay. She is an all around leader and was named the track team's captain for four years. She currently holds a 3.45 GPA. She will be studying math and would like to become a math professor when she graduates from Limestone. Mary Ann Bruno will be heading to Limestone from Lecanto High School in Florida, where she competed in the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles, and in the 4x400 relay. She will compete in the 100 and 400 hurdles for Limestone next spring. Amanda Clausing is a three-sport athlete from Miamisburg High School in Ohio. She runs cross country, track, and plays basketball. Her personal best for the 5k is 20:33 and she also runs the 2k steeplechase in track with a personal best time of 9:35. Brittany Jefferson currently runs for Stratford High School's program and competes in the 100 meter hurdles, 400 meter hurdles, long jump, and triple jump. In 2007, she was the South Carolina 4A State Champion in the 100 meter hurdle with a time of 14.86 and is looking to repeat her performance in this year's state championships. "These four young women are a great start to what looks like will be a solid recruiting class for the brand new track and field team that will start this coming academic year," Limestone coach Kevin Vees said. "These women are not only great athletes and leaders but will do very well in the classroom." |
