Summer hoop league registration continues

Registration is continuing at SageSport, the Boys and Girls Club and the Recreation District for the Cherokee County Summer Youth Basketball League. The league is for boys and girls ages 5 to 17. You also can sign up by calling Chris Dewberry at 488-9596 or Laymond Dewberry at 425-5860.

Softball tourneys

SSO Softball will hold the first leg of the SSAA Triple Crown on May 10 at Ferugson Park in Gastonia. Points champion of all three legs will receive a paid World berth. Class E teams only.

Ferguson Park will also host the SSAA Class D World Softball Tournament on Saturday, May 10. The entry fee is $185.

Jones leads

Braves past Reds

The Atlanta Braves made the most of their last chance to take advantage of the Cincinnati Reds' road futility.

Chipper Jones drove in five runs and the Braves scored seven runs in the second inning and beat Cincinnati 14-7 on Sunday to complete a three-game sweep in the Reds' only visit to Atlanta this season.

Jones hit his ninth homer, a threerun shot off Bronson Arroyo in the seven-run second. Kelly Johnson was 4-for-6 with three doubles and Mark Kotsay was 3-for-4 with a homer.

Kevin Garnett took a behind-theback pass from Paul Pierce, slammed in the dunk to make the lead three dozen points and then slashed his hand across his throat to signal what the Atlanta Hawks already knew.

"It's over," he told the crowd.

The game. The series. The surprising little scare Atlanta put into the NBA's best.

Garnett had 18 points and 11 rebounds, Pierce scored 22 points, and the Celtics turned back the pesky Hawks with a 99-65 victory Sunday in Game 7 of their playoff series to advance to the second round.
