Letter carriers' food drive set for May 10

No postage will be required this Saturday for any nonperishable food item Cherokee County residents want to have delivered to local food banks and charities.

Now in its 16th year, the National Association of Letter Carriers' annual "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive, will benefit seven local charities and organizations this year. Workers at the Gaffney Post Office are hoping this year will break records.

"Overall, every year has been larger than the last," said Alan Smith of the National Association of Letter Carriers, Branch 2190.

The way the food drive is set up, all of the food collected directly benefits the local comm- unity. "It goes back to the residents of Cherokee County who need it," Smith explained.

Last year's drive in Cherokee County collected 19,754 pounds of food, which was just a short of the goal, said Gaffney Postmaster Garvin Daniels.

Organizers hope to exceed 21,000 pounds of food this year.

This year's food drive will benefit the Salvation Army, the Harbor of Hope, Peach Center Ministries, Indian Hill Soup Kitchen, Cherokee Children's Home, Love Valley Baptist Church, and the Senior Centers of Cherokee County.
