WHAT'S UP Special events Moses Wood Camp Sons of Confederate Veterans will hold its annual Confederate Memorial Service at 10 a.m. Saturday in downtown Gaffney. After the service, those gathered will go to Oakland Cemetery, where the roll call of Confederate ancestors will be made. Following the ceremony, a picnic will be held at the organization's new headquarters at 1746 N. Limestone St. Bring a well-filled basket. A bluegrass concert and barbecue will begin at 5:30 p.m. Public invited to all of the events. Blacksburg, CKC, Buffalo and Antioch fire departments will sponsor a Family Fun Day on Saturday, May 10, from 12- 4 p.m. at the Blacksburg Volunteer Fire Department. Visitors will enjoy free hot dogs, chips and drinks. A 911 simulator, fire trucks, police cars, ambulances and a smoke house will be on display and there will be free prizes for children along with a drawing for a girl's and boy's bicycle at 3 p.m. (must be present to win). Fireworks, balloon animals, fire clowns and more will also be part of the day. Common Light College Ministry will present "Just Give Me Jesus... A Night of Worship" for college students on Thursday May 8, at 7 p.m. at the playground of First Baptist Church of Gaffney. Music will be presented by mycalvary. Also featured will be James Goslin, FCA area representative. Free hamburgers and hot dogs with all the trimming will be provided. Cherokee County Head Start will hold an Awareness Day and fish fry on Friday, May 9, from 4-7 p.m. at the Gaffney Head Start Center, 501 W. Rutledge Ave. There will be face painting, tic-tactoe toss, jumbo slide and other fun activities for children. Food will include fish plates, hot dog plates, single hot dogs and fish sandwiches, and soda. Organizations who wish to sponsor a booth or table at the event may call 489-0279. All proceeds will go to the Gaffney Head Start end-ofthe year event. Meetings The Cherokee County Republican Party will meet Thursday, May 8, at 6:30 p.m. at party headquarters. Public invited. The Blacksburg Business Association will meet Wednesday, May 8, at 6:30 p.m. at the Community House. All interested persons are invited to attend. The monthly meeting of Jack E. Daniel Chapter 54 DAV will be held Thursday, May 8, at 6:30 p.m. upstairs at VFW Post 3447. All members are asked to attend and spouses are welcome. All disabled veterans with an honorable discharge and their spouses and retired military personnel and their spouses are also welcome. VA officer Sammy Willard will answer questions pertaining to his field. Reunions The Lester reunion will be held Saturday, May 10, at Grassy Pond Baptist Church Family Life Center. Fellowship will begin at 5 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6. Those attending are asked to bring a well-filled basket. Self-defense class The Women's Ministry of Suck Creek Baptist Church is sponsoring a self-defense class for women on Friday, May 9, from 6-8 p.m. at the church's Life Center on Hwy. 11. Training will be by officers from the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Department Crime Prevention Unit. There is no charge and females of all ages are welcome to attend. |
