Shots fired during scuffle outside bar

The Gaffney Police Department is investigating a Sunday morning incident during which someone fired about 21 rounds from an assault rifle during a scuffle outside an East Birnie Street bar.

According to a police report, an officer was called to Smitty's Sports Bar, 114 E. Birnie St., at about 2:30 a.m. regarding a report of several fights in the parking lot. Upon his arrival, the officer saw about 60 people on Wall Street in the middle of the road. At about this time, the officer wrote in a report an unknown person fired 21 rounds from an AK-47 or SKS-type assault rifle. The street cleared out but the shooter could not be located. No injuries were reported.

A short time later, another officer reported a large group of people fighting in the parking lot across the street from the bar. Police said they were able disperse the crowd and restore order.
