Voter registration chairman speaks to BHS seniors

Barbara Shackleford, chairman of the Cherokee County Voter Registration Board, spoke to seniors at Blacksburg High School on Tuesday, May 6, about registering to vote and voting in the June 10 primary and the Nov. 4 general election.

Sherry Beam, history teacher at BHS, coordinated Shackleford's visit to inform the students of South Carolina law regarding registering to vote at age 17, if one will be 18 on or before the Nov. 4 general election. Those 17- year-olds who register are eligible to participate in only the June primary and the November general election.

State law provides for this early registration, allowing all voters eligible to participate in the general election to also participate in the political parties' nominating process for candidates whose name will appear on the general election ballot.

Mail-in voter registration forms were given to the students who are eligible under the law, and additional forms were provided for the students to take to family members if needed.
