Filing for school board election opens May 30 Cherokee County School Board candidates can file to run for office during the final week of the school year. The school board election filing period will run from noon Friday, May 30, until noon Friday, June 13, Cherokee County Election Commission Executive Director Suzanne Turner said. There is a $200 filing fee. State lawmakers decided last summer to move the school board elections from November to August. This year's school board election will be held Aug. 12. County voters will elect a new school board member for the District 8 seat held for 15 years by Ola Copeland, who died last October. School board seats open for re-election and the incumbents include District 2 (Willie Crosby), District 4 (Donnie Lee Smith), District 6 (Sandra Greene) and District 9 (Billy Blackwell). Joe Craig is the only candidate thus far who has announced plans to run, saying he will file for the District 6 seat held by Greene, who has indicated she might not run again. School board candidates may file by appointment at the Cherokee County Election Commission Office, 118 Administrative Drive in Gaffney. Interested parties should bring their driver's license, Social Security card and voter registration card. School board candidates must receive a majority of votes to be elected. Any runoffs will be held Aug. 26. |
