Grassy Pond, Blacksburg to get new carpet
By SCOTT POWELL Ledger Staff Writer spowell@gaffneyledger.com

The Cherokee County School District will spend $125,000 to replace carpeting at Blacksburg and Grassy Pond elementaries this summer.

School trustees requested the district investigate the condition of carpet and tile last fall at Ewing Middle, Blacksburg and Grassy Pond elementaries.

The district found the carpet and tiles had become badly worn and represented a safety issue in those schools, superintendent Dr. Bill James said. The district will replace the carpet in the buildings with an anti-microbacterial carpet.

It will cost $80,000 to replace the carpet at Blacksburg Elementary. The district will spend $45,000 for new carpet at Grassy Pond Elementary.

The purchases will be funded through the district's debt service fund, which is used for capital projects and school building expenses.

"We will begin the carpet replacement as soon as school is out for the year in June," James said. "It will be completed before school begins in August."

Citing cost concerns, the school board has asked the district to wait until next school year to replace worn floor and ceiling tiles at Ewing Middle.

It will cost $78,000 to remove ceiling tiles and replace floor coverings in the classrooms at Ewing Middle.

The district will pay for tile work at Ewing Middle by using school building funds.
