Gaffney High track stars have eye on bigger prize
Good will attempt to win state championships in the discus and shot put at Harry Parone Stadium in Columbia. The Gaffney High junior earned his first trip to the state finals with a second place finish in the discus and a fifth place showing in the shot put. The top eight finishers in each event advance to this Saturday's state meet in Columbia. "I think I have a pretty good chance at winning the state," Good said. "I just have to keep working hard and get a little more distance on my throws." Good is one of several Gaffney High boys track members that will compete in the state track meeting. Jordan Manning will compete in the high jump. Joe Craig will run in the 200 meters. Craig, Timmy Foster, Dennis Dawkins and Cameron Smith will compete in the 4x100 relay. Gaffney High boys track coach James Davis said he believes the Gaffney High track team will represent the school well at the state championship. Davis has been in this situation as both a coach and a track athlete. He competed in a couple state finals during a stellar track career at Boiling Springs. Now the Gaffney High track coach will watch Craig make his second appearance in the state finals. While it's a plus to be familiar with the environment, Davis said it's equally important to enjoy the accomplishment. "We are extremely proud of all our athletes," Davis said. "They have worked hard all year and now will compete in the state championship." In sizing up the competition, Davis mentions Dorman as one of the top teams to beat in the 4x100 relay. North Augusta and Dutch Fork track members will offer a challenge for Manning and Good to overcome in the high jump and discus events. The Gaffney track team is ready to show their talent in the state finals. "Their eye is on the prize," Davis said. "All of them want to be a state champion." |
