Indians invited to spend holidays in hoop hotbed

Gaffney's Jeff Brown is one of four returning players who will play in the prestigious holiday tourney this season.
The Gaffney Indians will be spending this Christmas in one of the country's hoop hotbeds - Kentucky.

Gaffney boys basketball coach Mark Huff said the Indians have accepted an invitation to play in the Cumberland Falls Invitational Tournament. The tournament will be held in Corbin, Ky., located south of Lexington, the home of the University of Kentucky Wildcats.

The field consists of four local teams and four out-of-state teams.

A team from Miami, Fla., won last year's event.

Huff said he doesn't know this year's list of teams. But he does know the tournament will be a positive experience for his team.

"Dorman, Union and Boiling Springs have been to this and they all said good things about it," he said. "There will be good competition and the games will be played in packed gyms because the community really supports it."

Huff said the Indians were invited to the tournament last year, but couldn't accept because of a prior commitment to play in the Greer tournament.

The Indians will return four players next season from a team that narrowly missed postseason play.

"It will be good for the kids," he said. "The kids like to get out and this will be a chance they won't get again."
