Burglar strikes Drug and Alcohol Abuse office The Gaffney Police Department said a burglar broke into the Cherokee County Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission on West Montgomery Street but may have left the implements of the crime behind. According to a police report, officers responded to a burglar alarm at the West Montgomery Street office early Thursday morning and discovered the rear door had been forced open. The burglar( s) also attempted to destroy the burglar alarm keypad near the rear door. A staff member for the agency subsequently was able to determine that nothing appeared missing from the office. During a search around the area, police said they found a blue and black Spartanburg County First Steps book bag abandoned in the 300 block of North Logan Street. The book bag contained a black wig, a black stocking cap, a masonry hammer, pruning shears, a Stanley screwdriver, and a torn up Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) T-shirt. A wallet was reported stolen from a vehicle parked outside the Church of Jesus on Kraft Street. According to a report at the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, someone shattered the driver's side window of a Dodge van between 9 p.m. Oct. 7 and 4 a.m. Oct. 8 and stole a wallet. The wallet contained an estimated $600 in cash, three bank cards and a driver's license. Theft and damage losses are estimated at $838. - Tim Gulla |
