S.C. Archaeological Field Day Oct. 25 in Summerville

The 17th annual South Carolina Archaelogy Month in October will culminate with the S.C. Archaeology Field Day on Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Colonial Dorchester State Historic Site near Summerville.

Organized by the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology (SCIAA) at the University of South Carolina and the archaeological community throughout the state, this year's observance and field day will focus on the Palmetto State's historic and prehistoric past and explore the Native American cultures that are not well represented in standard historical accounts.

S.C. Archaeology Field Day— in its 21st year— will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. With Archaeology of Historic Indian Trade and Colonial Interactions as the them, the annual family event will feature a series of demonstrations and exhibits that explore that chapter of South Carolina's history. Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for senior citizens, $3 for children; admission for children 4 and under is free.

Demonstrations and exhibits include ones on beads in Colonial trade, blowguns, Yaamasee archaeology from Altamaha Towne, Colonial and Revolutionary War re-enactors, aboriginal fishing technology, primitive Native American technology, storytelling, games and traditions, South Carolina underwater technology and a wealth of other attractions.
