NEW YEAR'S BABY — A Spartanburg couple celebrated New Year's Day with the arrival of Cherokee County's first baby of 2009. Bryanna Rae Ellis was born at 4:30 a.m. on New Year's Day at Upstate Carolina Medical Center. She weighed 7 pounds and 8 ounces and was delivered by certified nurse midwife Laurie Hill. Limestone College President Dr. Walt Griffin is in serious condition in a Spartanburg hospital after he suffered a heart attack Friday morning. Griffin was taken to Upstate Carolina Medical Center by a family member when he became ill at his College Drive residence. The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office is investigating three separate incidents involving the theft, or attempted theft, of safes. According to one of the incident reports, someone entered a residence in the 100 block of Copper Trail in Blacksburg on Jan. 1 and attempted to break into a safe in the residence.
