Cherokee County Senior Centers awarded special United Way grant for new equipment for Senior Computer Lab

United Way of the Piedmont's 2007-2008 Campaign reached an all-time record of more than $4.8 million, resulting in an unrestricted overage at the end of the fiscal year. United Way's Board of Directors is committed to investing these funds back in the community to support the important efforts of local non-profit organizations. In keeping with this charge, the directors awarded more than $250,000 for innovation/venture grants and special project/ capacity building grants at a ceremony on Wednesday, Dec. 10, at Denny's Corporate Headquarters Auditorium on in Spartanburg.

The Senior Centers of Cherokee County received $8,712 for six new computers, networking and printers for the Senior Computer Lab,

The innovation/venture grants were available to any non-profit organization providing services in Spartanburg,

Union or Cherokee counties requesting funds for program expansion, seed money, planning, study and/or local research surrounding a specific community issue.

"We are delighted to have had such success with our campaigns, enabling our board to award these special grants three years in a row," said Kathy Dunleavy, president and CEO of United Way of the Piedmont.
