POLICE REPORT
      The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office is investigating three separate incidents involving the theft, or attempted theft, of safes. According to one of the incident reports, someone entered a residence in the 100 block of Copper Trail in Blacksburg on Jan. 1 and attempted to break into a safe in the residence. Nothing was reported stolen.

Traffic fatalities down, number of homicides increased in 2008

      Cherokee County ended 2008 with double the homicides but fewer roadway deaths than it had in 2007, according to a year-end report from Coroner Dennis Fowler. Of the 167 deaths his office looked into, Fowler said rulings still are pending on five cases, including the deaths of two people whose bodies were found in the Broad River last year.

Proceeds from light show used to buy presents for hospitalized children

      A Christmas light show provided Gaffney resident Anthony Childers with a way to help brighten the lives of children spending the holidays in the hospital. His father, Marcus, allowed his house in Grassy Pond to be converted into a musical light show in November that featured 35,000 lights controlled by a computer.
