County council to elect officers

By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Staff Writer larry@gaffneyledger.com

Incumbent Cherokee County Council Chairman Hoke Parris wouldn't mind keeping that title when council members meet today to elect officers for the new year.

Parris said Friday he wants to remain as chairman — a post he's held for 16 of his 19 years on council.

"I will seek it again," he said.

Chairman is more than a figurehead position. The chairman presides over meetings, serves as ex-officio to all committees and represents the county at various functions.

The chairman also is responsible for making committee assignments.

Councilman Rufus Foster is the vice-chairman. He's also expected to retain that post.

Preceding the 5 p.m. council meeting at the Spartanburg Community College Cherokee County branch campus, the finance committee will receive an update on the public works department's damaged backhoe.
