Simplicity is key to successful party
      MEMPHIS, Tenn. - During the past several weeks, bakers have been grabbing their cookbooks and shopping lists to prepare delicious foods with which to entertain their guests. Desserts take on a mind of their own, with parties devoted completely to sweets. Now that the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season has gone, it is the perfect time to try a cookie swap.

Workaholic hubby not interested in changing
      Dear Annie: I have been married for three years to a wonderful man. He is gentle, thoughtful and works very hard. Let me clarify that: He will stay up until 2 or 3 a.m., come to bed and be up at 7 a.m. for work. Last Friday, he stayed up until 6 a.m. working on a computer problem for the church and then was up three hours later.

Ladies Progressive Club hosts annual Jack and Jill contest Dec. 8
      The Ladies Progressive Club held its annual Jack and Jill contest on Monday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m. at B.D. Lee Elementary School. One boy and four girls competed for the titles of Jack and Jill. The program was titled "Christmas Spirit" and entertainment was presented by the Praise Dancers of Bethel Baptist Church.

      United Way of the Piedmont's 2007-2008 Campaign reached an all-time record of more than $4.8 million, resulting in an unrestricted overage at the end of the fiscal year. United Way's Board of Directors is committed to investing these funds back in the community to support the important efforts of local non-profit organizations.

      Fund raiser Cherokee Falls Baptist Church will have a fundraising fish fry on Saturday, Jan 10, from noon until. The menu features Santee Cooper catfish fillets, catfish stew, chicken stew, chicken nuggets (for the kids), assorted desserts, tea and soft drinks. Dine in or carry out. Cost is donations only, with all proceeds going to the church's renovation fund.
