Strickland expects interest level to pick up
Phil Strickland The Gaffney High football offices should be busy places over the next few weeks.
That's when college recruiters are expected to ratchet up their efforts to lure some players to their schools.
Gaffney High football coach Phil Strickland said the activity level will increase since college coaches were allowed to begin recruiting again on Jan. 2.
"It was a dead period for coaches but now they have started to call me back," he said.
Strickland said he's readying videotape of players the college coaches have requested film on.
Gaffney Shrine Bowl tackle Denzelle Good is the only Gaffney player to be offered a scholarship or verbally commit to a school. Good, who is rated in a recent Charlotte Observer article as the fifth best prospect in South Carolina, announced in August he intends to play for Tom O'Brien and North Carolina State. Strickland said despite his attention-grabbing performance at the Shrine Bowl which has caused other high-profile schools to contact him, Good is not wavering on his commitment to the Wolfpack.
Several other Indians, including wide receivers Jeff Brown and Emison Hughes, linebackers John Michaels and Quincey Jackson, running back Jeremiah Cochran, and defensive end Darius Dawkins, are receiving interest from Division II colleges.
Strickland said no player has lined up any college visits.
"I expect things to pick up the next few weeks," the Gaffney coach said. "We've sent the tapes. Right now, it's in the hands of the college recruiters."
Players can begin to make their college intentions official on Wednesday, Feb. 11, the national signing date.
