Dear Cody:

Thanks for your piece in the paper Wednesday about how one of the largest industrial developments ever was rejected, as you put it so great, "without so much as a howdy-do."

It is just how so many of us feel, and yet we know that as long as there are certain "powers that be" who seem to make all the decisions for us citizens in this county, things will never change.

I think that this project was not studied near enough, was put in the "negative" light by a certain group, before most people knew what was going on, and was turned into a political circus. When you have a group that makes threats to council members, that they will not get re-elected if they vote a certain way, then you will see people turning on each other and not looking at the picture as a whole for everyone in this county. This project was for Cherokee County as a whole county and not for just certain districts. Perhaps, someone on the council should have put the questions to the people, to see how everyone felt. It is called a referendum. I am like you, what else will they find fault with when another industry comes knocking on our door. So far, this county has not had many knocking on our doors.

We need to get some new blood in this county and hopefully climb up the ladder to being a city that others want to come and visit some day and perhaps even move here. I always hear the "older folks" of this city talk about how it use to be and what all Gaffney had, example would be the textile mills. Do you think these folks would have said "NO" to those mills, if they had known that the smoke from the chimneys would some day destroy the ozone?

You are right, this deal is dead and the fallout will soon be seen. Makes me wonder which county will be the richer for having seen the opportunity of becoming partners with this company. Rita "Gabby" Fowler Gaffney, S.C.
