More questions than answers in Claremont St. fire

      The Gaffney Fire Department spent about three hours at the scene of an early Friday fire on Claremont Street, first battling the blaze and then determining why it started. Until more information is developed, however, the Gaffney Fire Department report on the fire will contain question marks.

School district's adult education program kicking into high gear

      If your New Year's Resolution is to earn a high school diploma or GED, January is the time to begin. The Cherokee County Adult Education program will enroll new students Friday, Jan. 9, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at its office on Allison Road behind the National Guard Armory.

POLICE REPORTS
      The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office reported the trashing of a man's possessions. According to a police report, a McIntire Road, Blacksburg, resident returned home Jan. 6 to find his couch, mattress and clothing cut up and thrown outside the home.

Ewing Middle students have some added incentive for doing the right things

      Ewing Middle School students could get a new video game system or DVD player for free just for doing the right things in school. An X Box video game system, camcorder and autographed footballs are among the prizes Ewing Middle students can earn in an academic incentive program that starts Tuesday.

Two charged with criminal sexual conduct

      A 20-year-old city man and a 16-year-old boy were arrested Wednesday and charged with the kidnapping and first degree criminal sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl inside a Huntington Square apartment Tuesday night.

Property owners have until Jan. 15 to file appeal with county tax office

      The clock is ticking on new property owners who have a beef with the appraised value of their property. This includes appraisals for new construction and people who have acquired property in 2008. They have until Thursday, Jan. 15 to file an appeal with the Cherokee County Tax Assessor.

New county garbage trucks ready for action

      If that county garbage truck that picked up your trash looks a little newer, there's a good reason. It is. Two new county garbage trucks are expected to hit the streets today. The county purchased the trucks from Amick Equipment at a total cost of $230,000. They were expected to be delivered this past Friday.
