New county garbage trucks ready for action

By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Staff Writer larry@gaffneyledger.com

If that county garbage truck that picked up your trash looks a little newer, there's a good reason.

It is.

Two new county garbage trucks are expected to hit the streets today. The county purchased the trucks from Amick Equipment at a total cost of $230,000. They were expected to be delivered this past Friday.

Cherokee County Assistant Administrator Holland Belue said the new trucks replace two aging 1999 models.

Typically logging about 2,000 hours on the road a year, the typical life expectancy of a garbage truck is about seven to 10 years, he said.

The county has seven primary trucks in its fleet. Several of those should be replaced in the next several years.

"We still got a few old ones," Belue said.

The garbage truck's chassis is built by Freightliner.
