Joe H. Poovey

NEWTON, N.C. - Joe Herbert Poovey, 83, of N.C. Highway 10 West, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2009, at his residence.

Born Nov. 6, 1925, in Catawba County, he was the son of the late William Franklin and Myrtie Merle Starr Poovey. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Startown and retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation

in 1988

after 40 years of

service. Mr. Poovey was a charter member of the Startown Lions Club and a 25- year member of the Maiden Masonic Lodge No. 592. He was a long-time member of the Catawba County Cattlemen's Association and served in the U.S. Army from 1945 until 1946.

Mr. Poovey was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Pauline Elizabeth Carswell Poovey; a sister, Mary Lea Poovey Cook; and brothers, W. Fred Poovey and Ralph Poovey.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Gary D. and Dianne T. Poovey of Vale, N.C.; a daughter and son-inlaw, Dr. Gena E. Poovey and Noah S. Lindemann of Gaffney, S.C.; and nieces, including Barbara Poovey Burgin, Miriam Cook Wilfong and Peggy Poovey Bissette; step-grandchildren, Bradley Cooke and his wife, Jessica, of Huntersville, N.C., and their children, Hunter and Gracie, and Matthew Cooke and his wife, Becca, of Jarvisburg, N.C.

A service of remembrance was held at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 11, at St. Paul Lutheran Church. The Rev. Chris Christopher will officiate and burial will follow in St. Paul Memorial Park. Visitation was held from 1-3 p.m. at the church prior to the service.
