BRIEFS

Gaffney Middle remains unbeaten

Gaffney Middle improved to 5-0 after defeating Carver 48-30 on Thursday. Thomas Hardy led the Chiefs with 21 points and O'Bryant Davidson added 13.

Marquise Jackson and Rayshon Ellis played well defensively. Gaffney Middle plays Whitlock at home on Tuesday.

Pacman may return to Cowboys

Adam "Pacman" Jones suggested Saturday his days with the Dallas Cowboys may not be over.In an interview on CBS' NFL pregame show, the oft-troubled cornerback said that not only does he expect to play football next season, "I think I might be back in Dallas."

Host James Brown then asked: "And you have an inkling that Jerry Jones will give you another shot?"

Jones grinned and said, "Yeah, I do," but didn't offer any details to back his assertion.

Cowboys spokesman Rich Dalrymple said the team had no comment.

Dallas released Jones on Wednesday after a turbulent season in which he was suspended six games for an off-field scuffle and made little impact on the field.

Gaffney wrestlers place 9th at Bearcat

The Gaffney High wrestling team finished ninth out of 32 teams at the Bearcat Invitational at Rock Hill High School this weekend.

Stan Easterling and James Costello were the highest finishers for the Indians. Easterling placed fourth at 215 lbs., while Costello lost in overtime in the semifinals to finish four at heavyweight.

Gaffney's Jared Barnhill placed fifth in the 171 lb. weight class, a place ahead of Dillion Haney, who finished sixth at 119 lbs.

"I was really proud of the kids," Gaffney assistant coach David Bush said. "They wrestled against some of the top kids in the state."

Eastside High was the overall winner. The host Bearcats finished second.

The Indians will host Nation Ford on Thursday. The varsity match will begin at 7 p.m.

Ravens advance to AFC title game

A not-so-raw rookie and a trustworthy veteran lifted the Baltimore Ravens to the brink of the Super Bowl. With the help of a brutal defense that knocks opponents silly, of course.

After all, these are the Ravens, who love nothing more than to win grudge matches. And, this one was worthy of the WWE.

Baltimore survived 13-10 on Saturday against the Tennessee Titans thanks to Matt Stover's 43- yard field goal with 53 seconds remaining. The unflappable Joe Flacco was certain the 40-year-old kicker would get his team into next weekend's AFC title game at either Pittsburgh or San Diego.

"I just watched on the big screen," said the first rookie quarterback to win two playoff games. "I didn't watch it live for whatever reason."

Eagles knock off Super Bowl champs

Donovan McNabb and his Philadelphia Eagles get another week to keep chasing that elusive Super Bowl crown. Eli Manning and the New York Giants get a whole offseason to wonder what went wrong.

McNabb made all the big plays that Manning did not, and the Eagles eliminated the Super Bowl champions 23-11 Sunday to reach the NFC title game for the fifth time in eight seasons.

Throw in Philadelphia's hard-hitting, ball-hawking defense, and these NFL playoffs are now for the Birds — the underdog Eagles, Cardinals and Ravens all won on the road this weekend.
