Cowpens National Battlefield marks 228th anniversary of pivotal battle
Lantern walks, cavalry demonstrations will highlight this weekend's activities
      C owpens National Battlefield will celebrate the 228th anniversary of the Battle of Cowpens, a Revolutionary War battle that helped turn the tide of war to the advantage of the Americans, on Saturday, Jan. 17, and Sunday, Jan. 18. All activities are free and open to the public. Many of the activities are targeted especially for children.

      Dear Annie: I'm a 15-year-old girl whose family is struggling in today's economy. Not long ago, my mother seemed more and more agitated when she came home from work. Soon I preferred to go to sleep before she came home so I wouldn't have to hear her yell and cry.

     Louzettie Hill of Gaffney celebrated her 90th birthday on Jan. 12, 2009. She was joined by her family and friends at a special dinner Saturday. Mrs. Hill still drives and lives by herself. She loves to cook and enjoys sewing for the public.

      XI Alpha Delta Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi held its December meeting and Christmas dinner on Thursday, Dec. 18, at 6:30 p.m. at the Four Seasons in Spartanburg. A party of 24 was present, which consisted of members and their spouses and/or friends.

      Fund raisers The Cherokee County Veterans Day Organization will have a sale at Ace Hardware on Friday, Jan. 16, and Saturday, Jan. 17, starting at 9 a.m. On sale will be Veterans Day tee-shirts, hats and program books. There is also a limited number of books, written by the late Conley Clark, donated by his widow for sale. His book details his experience as a POW.
