Wildcats can't overcome slow start in loss to Christ Church

By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Sports Editor larry@gaffneyledger.com

It's tough to win when you fall behind by double-digits in the first quarter. The Blacksburg Wildcats can attest to that after a 55-45 region loss at Christ Church on Tuesday.

The Wildcats fell behind 21-3 in the first quarter and could never make up that deficit.

After a quiet first quarter, the Wildcats came alive to trim the deficit to six before halftime. But the Cavaliers nailed a three at the buzzer to take a 32-23 advantage into intermission.

The Wildcats closed within six again with three minutes to play, but couldn't draw any closer.

"I felt like we just dug ourselves a huge hole," Blacksburg coach Travis Miller said. "We pretty much outplayed them the second and third quarters."

Miller praised the play of starter Myron Mitchell and reserves Ty Davis and Dean Craig.

The Wildcats fall to 3-10 overall and 2-2 in the region. They return to action Friday at Greenville Charter before returning home to play Southside Christian on Tuesday.

"We are in a big stretch of games for us," Miller said.
