WHAT'S UP Church news Shady Grove Baptist Church will celebrate Black History Month with special speakers each Sunday during morning worship. The program theme is "Moments in Black History - Yes We Can"! Speakers will be Kenny Norris, Quinton Littlejohn, Joniqua Smith Ingram, teens from Camp Bennettsville, Cynthia Pearson, Deborah Littlejohn and others. Minister Timothy Bethea, accompanied by approximately 50 teens and staff from Camp Bennettsville, will deliver the Black History sermon Sunday, Feb. 15, at 11 a.m. There will be a singing Friday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m. at New Harvest Ministries, 215 Pecan St. Gregg Martin and other local singers will be ministering. Meetings Tuesday Woman's Club will meet Feb. 10 at 4 p.m. at Cherokee County Alliance of Visual Arts (CAVA) downtown. Hostesses are Betsy Jolliff, Donna Childers and Dr. Gena Poovey. Special events The 40th anniversary celebration and memorial for Pat and PT McKown will be held Saturday, Feb. 21, at 6 p.m. at McKown's Cabinets, 382 Rolling Mills Road. Fund raisers Chicken stew and baked items will be sold at Draytonville Baptist Church Family Life Center on Friday, Feb. 6, from 3-7 p.m. Cost is $6 a quart. Proceeds will go to the Relay for Life of Cherokee County. A car wash with proceeds going to Relay for Life will be held Saturday, Feb. 7, beginning at 10:30 a.m. at Radcliff Family Chiropractic, 122 S. Granard St. All donations accepted. The annual "graveyard" stew supper will be held Saturday, Feb. 7, from 5-8 p.m. in the fellowship building at Glendale Baptist Church, 151 Church St., Glendale (Clifton/Glendale Road, Spartanburg). The menu includes fresh chicken stew, brewed in part by Vann Cudd and served by Ronn Ward and crew; salmon stew served by Tom Lawson and crew; and vegetable soup with beef served by a number of soup makers. Side dishes will be homebaked cornbread, saltines, homemade cakes and pies and deep dish peach cobbler. Beverages will be freshbrewed iced tea, sodas and coffee. All donations will go to the Glendale Community Graveyard Cemetery Cleanup Fund. There is no charge for the meal - donations only. Senior Center news A seminar on the conversion from analog to digital television will be held Monday, Feb. 9, at 10:30 a.m. at the Gaffney Center, 499 W. Rutledge Ave. A technician will be on hand to demonstrate converter box installation, converter box procurement, distribute printed materials, and answer questions. Anyone interested is welcome to attend. |
