Dorothy Theresa Junghans, 88, of Gaffney, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009, at her residence.

Born in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late George R. Junghans and Elizabeth Jennie Bernhardt Junghans. Miss Junghans was educated at the Immaculate Conception Academy, graduating in 1938, and retired from the Department of Justice.

The positions she held in the District of Columbia included Administrative Assistant/Secretary to Director of Public Information, Department of Justice; Administrative Assistant/Secretary to Office of Deputy Attorney General, Department of Justice; Secretary to the National Security Council, Executive Office Building; Secretary to Chief of Internal Security System, Criminal Justice Division; and the FBI Headquarters. Miss Junghans received the sustained Superior Performance Award from the Department of Justice in 1962.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Gaffney.

In addition to her parents, Miss Junghans was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard Junghans and Daniel A. Junghans (Theresa); three sisters, Mary E. Winemiller (Richard), Leona Hudson (Ross) and Anna M. Youngs (Lee Starr, Cliff); a sister-inlaw, Laura Junghans; a niece, Janet M. Winemiller; a nephew, John Starr; and a cousin, Jack Junghans.

Miss Junghans is survived by a brother, George B. Junghans, of Maryland and a sister in-law, Bunny Junghans of Arizona. Her nieces include Diana Gowen of Maryland, Elaine Eslami (Dr. Said Eslami) of South Carolina, Constance Junghans of Arizona, Paula Winkler (Ward) of North Carolina, Linda Cornish (Bob) of New Mexico, Karen Seliegman (Bruce) of Arizona, Lisa Johnson (Brian) and Jennie Sue Junghans. Her nephews include Theodore Hudson (LiPing) of Virginia, Richard Winemiller (Faye) of California, and Michael and Larry Junghans; great-nieces and great-nephews; and cousins, Mary Ann Stavory (Alex) of Virginia and Mary Lou Junghans of Maryland.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at Sacred Heart Church, 407 Grace St., with Father Francisco Cruz officiating. Interment will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Feb. 5, from 6-8 p.m. at Blakely Funeral Home.

Miss Junghans may be remembered with memorials to Sacred Heart Church or Sacred Heart Church Building Fund, 407 Grace St., Gaffney, SC 29340; or to Hospice Care of South Carolina, 1612 N. Limestone St., Gaffney, SC 29340; or to a charity of one's choice.

The family expresses heartfelt thanks to caregivers Roberta, Wilma, Teresa and Ruth, and most especially, Kay and Evelyn.
