File Photo Emison Hughes and the Gaffney Indians improved to 7-0 in the region with a win over Nation Ford on Tuesday. The Indians return home Friday to face Fort Mill. Turns out the Indians can win a slow down game, too.

After scoring more than 100 points in an up tempo game at York on Friday, the Indians changed gears to a more deliberate pace in downing host Nation Ford 41-19 on Tuesday.

The Falcons used a delay game to keep the score close in the first half. But the Indians broke open the game after halftime by forcing a couple of turnovers and outscoring Nation Ford 15-2 in the third quarter.

The No. 2-ranked Indians improve to 18- 2 overall and 7-0 in Region III-4A.

Gaffney coach Mark Huff said he was pleased his players followed the game plan and didn't get frustrated playing at a slower than normal pace.

"The kids did what we asked them to do," Huff said.

The Falcons went to their slow down tactic after the opening tip. They held the ball until a player broke free for an uncontested layup.

Gaffney went up 4-2 before the Falcons scored on another layup to tie the game seconds before the end of the first quarter.

The pace didn't change in the second quarter as the Indians took a 10-6 lead into halftime.

The game gave the Indians a chance to rediscover their defensive edge, according to Huff.

"We played straight-up man defense," he said.

The defense forced Nation Ford into 23 turnovers, including 10 during the Indians' decisive third-quarter run.

Josh Corry had 16 points and Jeff Brown added 12 to pace the Indians.

After three straight road games, Gaffney returns home Friday to host the Fort Mill Yellow Jackets.
