BLACKSBURG - Jerry (J.L.) Lafayette Goodson, 73, of 834 E. Cherokee St., passed away Monday, Feb. 9, 2009, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Born in Blacksburg, Mr. Goodson was the husband of Geraldine Peterson Goodson of the home and the late Sybil O. Goodson. He was the son of the late Jasper (J.L.) Lafayette Goodson and the late Mayble Ann Goodson Goodson. Mr. Goodson worked in textiles as a loom fixer and was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Goodson is survived by a step-son, Scott Bell of Augusta, Ga.; four stepdaughters, Sandy Bell of Blacksburg, Becky Allen of Shelby, Debbie Carroll and Connie Marie Scruggs, both of Blacksburg; eight stepgrandchildren; and 10 stepgreat grandchildren.

Services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 11, at 3 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, with the Revs. Richard Brown and Alester McKinney officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be George Putman, Albert Peterson, Jackie Hawkins, Scott Bell, Cecil Bell, Preston Peterson and Jimmy Scruggs.

Visitation was held Tuesday, Feb. 10, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Gordon Mortuary.
