Man accused of DUI, leaving scene of accident
John Thomas McCombs III is given a field sobriety test at the scene of this accident. A 48-year-old Gaffney man was arrested following a Monday afternoon accident on North Limestone Street.
John Thomas McCombs III, of Lockhart Lane, made a left turn from 6th Street and crashed into the side of a vehicle headed south, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The collision pushed the second vehicle, driven by Anthony Lopez, 31, of North Limestone Street, into a parking lot.
Lance Cpl. Jeff Gaskin of the South Carolina Highway Patrol said McCombs was arrested for driving under the influence and leaving the scene. Both McCombs and Lopez were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, the officer said.
Witnesses said McCombs left the accident scene on foot. One witness followed him until police arrived and took McCombs into custody.
McComb's vehicle sustained severe front end damage and Lopez's car sustained damage on its driver's side. Both cars had to be towed from the scene.
