Call Sen. Peeler to urge support of landfill moratorium legislation
Dear Editor:
Everyone is concerned about South Carolina's ranking on various lists. We are all too often at the bottom of the good list and at the top of the bad list. Let's try to stay off the top of another bad list.
North America's largest landfill is currently near Los Angeles. It covers 400 acres. If Waste Management's proposed landfill for Cherokee County covers that much at a minimum, with a lot of acreage for expansion, we could potentially end up holding the undesirable title of having the United States' largest Garbage Mountain.
I urge everyone to call Senator Peeler and tell him we don't want South Carolina to be the leader in garbage dumps and to support Bill S324, which would place a moratorium on these mega-landfills in the state.
If South Carolina truly has pride in the state and would like to improve our rankings on these lists, let's start with this issue facing our beautiful county. Sincerely, Ellen Pauly Gaffney, S.C.
