Saints streak to eighth straight win

The Limestone College Saints swept a twinbill from North Greenville University, running their current winning streak to a season-best eight games.

The Saints, who are 9-1 in their last 10 games, took game one by a score of 12-5 and game two by a count of 11-4.

The Saints improve their record to 24-16. North Greenville falls to 7-30 with the two losses.

In game one, the Saints jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning. Greg Dailey and Aldo Mendez reached base and both scored on a two-run double by Drew Lydon. David Christy then chased Lydon home with an RBI double.

Limestone brought another run home in the bottom of the second. Mendez the gave the Saints a 4-0 lead as he delivered a clutch, two-out RBI double.

With two outs in the top of the third, the Crusaders were able to capitalize on two key Limestone lapses.

After an RBI groundout by Derek Fulmer made it 4-1, the Saints gave up a run on a passed ball and another on a fielding error. North Greenville tied it at four apiece on an RBI single by Dylan Fulk.

The game did not stay tied for long as Joe Maloney pushed the Saints back in front with a three-run homer, giving the home team a 7-4 lead.

North Greenville took advantage of another Saints' error in the top of fourth. Randy Stegall began the inning with a double and then made it 7-5 when Fulmer reached on an error.

The Saints added a single run in the bottom of the fourth as Lydon, who singled with one out, came home to score on an RBI single by Tim Welsh.

Limestone scored twice in the bottom of the fifth and the sixth innings. In the fifth, Ryan McKenzie worked a two-out walk before Mendez ripped an RBI triple. Lydon gave the Saints a 10-5 lead on a run-scoring single.

In the sixth, Dailey drove in two runs with a double.

Jordan Barnett earned the win, pushing his season record to 5-1. Barnett went six innings, allowing five runs (only one earned) on nine hits. He struck out seven. Michael McAbee pitched the final inning, striking out the side.

In game two, Limestone jumped out in front with a big opening frame and never looked back.

The Saints put up six in their half of the first. Mendez tripled in a run to tie the game at 1. Lydon reached first base on an error, which made it a 2-1 as Mendez came home to score. Welsh drove home a run with a single to give the Saints a 3-1 lead before Maloney delivered his second three-run bomb of the day.

In the second, Limestone played a little small ball to grab a 7-1 lead. Daily singled, stole second, and eventually came home to score on an RBI sacrifice fly by Christy.

The Saints put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fourth.

The table setters, Dailey and Mendez, led off with singles before executing a double steal. Lydon gave the home-standing Saints an 8-4 lead with an RBI sacrifice fly. Mendez made it 9-4 as he scored on a balk. Austin doubled home a run before he himself would come home to score on a balk.

The Saints host Lander University on Wednesday, April 8.
