Some of the billions earmarked for infrastructure upgrades from the federal stimulus money will find its way to Gaffney — if the city can locate some money of its own.

Gaffney Administrator James Taylor said the state Department of Transportation has approved the federal money to widen Beltline Road and construct a sidewalk along the stretch of heavily-used roadway that connects Floyd Baker Boulevard and Providence Road.

In order to fund the project, the state DOT is requiring the city install the stormwater drainage system. Taylor said that will cost the city about $200,000.

Taylor said he's been busy trying to secure a grant or qualify for additional stimulus money to cover the cost.

"We are doing everything we can to find the money," he said.

Taylor said it's a worthy project because of the high amount of pedestrian traffic.

"It's a pedestrian safety issue," he said. "That's the way to go to get to Floyd Baker Boulevard and the stores there."
