Special events

Gospel in the Street, a ministry of Restoration Church International, will present "Singing in the Street" at Connecticut Village on Saturday, May 9, from 4-6 p.m. There will be free cake and ice cream for those attending. For more information, contact Bernard Pitts, 864-425-0983.

VFW Post 3447 and its auxiliaries will sponsor their fourth annual horseshoe tournament on Saturday, May 8, starting at 2 p.m. The competition will be a double elimination draw for your partner tournament. There will be one event only and a $10 entry fee per person. Lunch will be sold starting at 1 p.m. Trophies will be awarded to the winners. The VFW National Home for Children is one of the many programs that the organizations support.

Meetings

Tuesday Woman's Club will meet at 4 p.m. on May 12 at the home of Mrs. Roy Mathis. Co-hostesses are Mrs. Charlie Stroup and Mrs. Boone Peeler.

Cherokee County Republican Women will meet Monday, May 11, at 11:45 a.m. at the Aegean Restaurant on West Floyd Baker Boulevard. Guest speaker will be U.S. Congressman Gresham Barrett, a candidate for South Carolina Governor in 2010.

The Cherokee County Branch NAACP will meet May 13 at 7 p.m. at Westside Full Gospel Church. All members are asked to attend.

Senior Center events

The Gaffney Senior Center will be offering a Wilton cake decorating class in June. Classes will be held every Thursday from 6-8 p.m. beginning June 4 for four consecutive weeks. Class fee is $45. Register before May 15 by calling 864-489-3868.

Gospel singing

Genesis of West Virginia and The Ambassadors for Christ of Spartanburg will be in concert Saturday, May 9, at 7 p.m. at Chesnee Gospel Music Center, 672 Green Lake Road. Concessions will be available beginning at 5:30 p.m. For more information, call 828-223-1514

Church news

Shady Grove Baptist Church, 712 Green River Road, will have its annual Mother's Day program Sunday, May 10, during the 11 a.m. worship service. Speaker will be Kimberly Tate Brown, daughter of Deacon and Mrs. James Henry Shippy and an associate minister at Piney Grove Baptist Church, Cowpens. The Deaconess, Trustees' and Ministers' wives will be in charge of the service. All mothers will be recognized along with the church's oldest mother and the mother with the most children present at morning worship.

New Trinity Christian Fellowship Ministries, 711 Cherokee Ave., will celebrate Mother's Day on May 10 at 10 a.m. Speaker will be Co- Visionary Lady Patricia Davis.

The Senior Missionary Circle of Philadelphia Baptist Church will celebrate its annual Woman's Day on Sunday, May 10, during the 10 a.m. worship service. Guest speaker will be Minister Jennifer Hemphill, associate minister of Bethel Baptist Church.

Mother's Day will be observed at Mt. Sinai Mis- sionary Baptist Church on Sunday, May 10, at 11 a.m. Guest speaker will be the Rev. Mary Jefferies, pastor of Indian Hill Baptist Church.

The YWAs of Bethel Baptist Church, 218 Dr. L.M. Rosemond Lane, will sponsor a Spa Day on Saturday, May 9, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. in the church annex. Tickets are $10 for the spa and $15 for the massage.

Fundraisers

DeJa Vu Consignments, 700 Cherokee Ave., will have a bag sale to benefit a mission trip to Montana on Saturday, May 9, from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. The cost to fill a bag is $5. The sale will be held at the rear of the building. Sponsoring churches are Mt. Whitaker Baptist Church and Calvary Baptist Church.
