A 'Smart Mouth' could help walkers relieve sore feet at tonight's event
      Smart Mouth personal pan pizzas will fill the stomachs and support local efforts to stamp out cancer at Friday's Relay for Life. This year, the county's School Nutrition Association (SNA) has partnered with Smart Mouth Pizza on a fundraiser during Friday's American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

Relay for Life begins tonight at 7
      The Cherokee County Relay for Life will be held at the Timken Track from 7 p.m. on Friday, May 8, until 7 a.m. on Saturday, May 9. Highlights of the event will be the Survivors' Lap at 7 p.m. and the Luminary Service Lap at approximately 9 p.m.

'Fun Day' Saturday in Blacksburg
      Fire departments in the eastern half of Cherokee County will be joining forces this Saturday to hold a Family Fun Day in Blacksburg. Now in its second year, the family fun day will be held at the Blacksburg Volunteer Fire Department from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

POLICE REPORT
      A burglar or burglars stole more than $1,800 in property from a Teague Road home during a May 6 burglary, according to the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office. Police said someone gained entry to the home in the 100 block by tossing a brick through a glass door.

Belue vows to present balanced budget proposal to county council
      Cherokee County Assistant Administrator Holland Belue knows one thing for certain: Next Monday, county officials will present a balanced budget to Cherokee County Council. How council chooses to balance a $700,000 shortfall as a result in a cut in state funding is when things become more unclear.

Limestone graduation underway
      Approximately 400 graduates will join the ranks of Limestone College alumni after Spring Commencement ceremonies May 7, 8 and 9 in Fullerton Auditorium. All three ceremonies begin at 4 p.m. Professor of History Dr. Tom Thomson delivered the commencement address on Thursday to approximately 100 traditional day program graduates.

May 20 is deadline to apply for emergency food and shelter funds
      Cherokee County, S.C. Local Board No. 7394.00 has been awarded federal funds through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) for the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program. Cherokee County, S.C. Food and Shelter Board has been chosen to receive $26,988 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county.

Laid off workers eligible
      WASHINGTON - U.S. Rep. John Spratt (D-SC) announced today that workers laid off by Industrial Minerals Inc. of Blacksburg are eligible to apply for federal assistance. The workers processed borate ores. All workers at the plant who were totally or partially separated from employment on or after Jan. 28, 2008, may apply for benefits.

Republican senators push for right to secret ballot
      COLUMBIA - South Carolina's Republican Senators pushed a bill out of Judiciary Committee on May 5 that protects workers from union intimidation. H.3305, introduced by Rep. Eric Bedingfield, is a constitutional amendment that would guarantee a worker's right to voting by secret ballot during union organization.

DOCK DOGS
     Terry "Stick" Queen of Comfort and Joy Kennels recently competed with Kaiser at a dockdogs competition in Virginia Beach, Va., where Kaiser jumped 22'1" to take home 4th place in the Pro Division. Kaiser also earned his Master title that weekend, which qualifies him to go to the Nationals in Columbus, Ohio, in October.

$32,000 grant enables students to train on computer simulator
      Ever wondered what it's like to handle a 9-1-1 call? Cherokee Technology Center students will soon gain firsthand experience in fielding emergency calls through a new 9-1-1 computer simulator. The county's vocational high school received a $32,000 grant last year which enables students to receive on-the-job training with emergency communications equipment.

Spratt votes to fund COPS
      WASHINGTON - U.S. Rep. John Spratt (D-SC) Thursday voted to reauthorize funding for "COPS," a federal grant program proven to reduce crime by helping local law enforcement agencies put more police on the beat. Over the next five years, the bill is expected to provide for the hiring of 50,000 more officers nationwide, including 486 in South Carolina.

S.C. Election Commission sends notice to inactive voters
      The South Carolina State Election Commission (SEC) this week is sending out postcards to more than 120,000 inactive voters throughout the state. The purpose of the postcard is to reach out to voters who haven't voted in the past four years to determine if they still reside at the address where registered.

     FOOD DRIVE — Gaffney Mayor Henry Jolly hands local letter carrier Alan Smith his donation for the Gaffney Post Office's annual "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive on Saturday, May 9. Letter carriers will collect nonperishable food donations along their mail routes. The recipients are the Salvation Army, Miracle Hill Ministries, PeachCenter Ministries, Indian Hill Soup Kitchen, Cherokee Children's Home and Senior Centers of Cherokee County.
