Relay for Life begins tonight at 7
The Cherokee County Relay for Life will be held at the Timken Track from 7 p.m. on Friday, May 8, until 7 a.m. on Saturday, May 9.
Highlights of the event will be the Survivors' Lap at 7 p.m. and the Luminary Service Lap at approximately 9 p.m. Young children dressed in angel costumes will assist in reminding the crowd that the Luminary Lap should be walked silently in memory of cancer victims and in honor of cancer survivors.
During the event appearances will be made by the Gaffney High School and Blacksburg High School marching bands and cheerleaders; the Mike's Creek Church Choir; Chase Fowler; and Cy Addington with his bluegrass band.
A variety of food will be available for purchase and a deejay will provide music throughout the evening. Alcohol and tobacco products will not be permitted. Team members who wish to unload camp site materials may enter at the Morgan Drive entrance until 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
After unloading supplies, team members should move their vehicles. Handicapped parking has been relocated to the back of the track and can be accessed from the Morgan Drive entrance. The Morgan Drive parking area must be cleared of team members' vehicles by 5 p.m. so that adequate space will be available for the handicapped.
Available for food vendors only, the small loading/unloading area which may be accessed directly from Highway 29 will be open until 4:30 p.m on Friday. This temporary loading/ unloading parking area must be cleared of vehicles by 5 p.m.
The Timken Track will open at 7 a.m. on Friday morning, May 8. The Survivors' Tent will open at 5:30 p.m. General parking for Relay will be in the main Timken parking lot.
Relay For Life, the signature fundraiser of the American Cancer Society, is observing its 25th anniversary this year.
