On a daily basis, Cherokee History and Arts Museum Director Billy Pennington is approached by complete strangers willing to offer him a story passed down through the years, and sometimes generations.

"It's amazing how many people will tell me about things they have seen and heard, whether through stories told by their parents or something they were a part of," Pennington said. "As they would tell these stories, I would take notes for future research, but unfortunately when you hear so many, you tend to put them in different places."

Hoping to create a place for local residents both young and old to be able to share moments forever etched in their memories, the Cherokee Historical and Preservation Society launched a new "Memories Blog" on the organization's Web site a few weeks ago.

"The site is a means for oral history to be shared by locals and preserved for the future," Pennington said. "Much oral history is lost to time, but the digital age allows for various means to record the stories."

The blog can be accessed at www.cherokeecountyhistory. org by simply clicking the "Memories Blog" button.

"It really can tell a lot about this county's history, except that it's from a more personal view," Pennington said.
