Indians shock Laurens to win district
Gaffney's Cameron Culp pitched two innings to get the win in the first game on Thursday. Michael Wright wasn't the hero the Gaffney High baseball team would have expected.
But the freshman righthander outdueled Laurens' more heralded pitcher to lead the Indians to a 2-0 district-clinching victory over the host Raiders on Thursday.
The Indians now advance to face Dorman at home on Saturday in the first round of the Upperstate playoffs.
Anybody remember the 2-0 loss to Spring Valley in the district opener? Since that disappointing performance, the Indians have strung together four straight must wins, including a stomach-churning 8-7 extra-inning win in the first game against Laurens on Thursday.
"I'm just very proud of the kids," Gaffney coach Jeff Osment said. "I told the team before the games today that I thought our 15 players were better than (Laurens) two great pitchers. Everybody on the team contributed in some way to the wins today."
But Wright's performance can't be underestimated. His one-hit shutout ranks as one of the dominant outings by a Gaffney pitcher this season.
"You could just look at him and you knew he was comfortable out there," Gaffney coach Jeff Osment said. "It was just a tremendous effort by a freshman. He just wasn't intimidated at all. You would have thought he was a senior."
The Indians would score all the runs Wright would need in the first inning when McCrae Norton lead off with a walk, went to second on a passed ball and scored on Tyler Wilson's double.
Gaffney added an insurance run in the second on Cameron Culp's single that scored backup catcher Nick Mabry, who was playing for an injured Josh Mata.
Gaffney forced the second game by scoring three runs in the top of the 10th. Michael Hughey got things going with a single before Bobby Jackson walked and Bubba Wright reached on an error to load the bases.
After Thomas Goode's sacrifice fly knocked in Hughey, John Michaels delivered a key 2-run hit.
Laurens had a 5-4 lead but the Indians tied it with a run in the top of the seventh.
Tyler Wilson went eight innings before giving way to Culp, who went the last two to earn the victory.
