$19.1 MILLION
Cherokee County Council will consider final reading today of its proposed fiscal year $19.1 million spending plan.
The proposed spending plan has no tax hikes, salary increases or new capital spending.
There is, however, a $1.2 million transfer from the county's fund balance to cover a gaping shortfall caused by cuts in state funding.
Today's final reading is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Spartanburg Community College's Cherokee County campus, 101 Campus Drive, Gaffney.
The proposed budget goes into effect July 1.
County council is also scheduled to honor the Gaffney High School baseball and softball state championship teams and hear from its accountant on how it can remain in compliance with new GASB accounting principles.
At a recent meeting, council members were told that eliminating a retirement benefit would reduce their annual liability under the new federal accounting from $500,000 a year to about $350,000.
Council members also have discussed eliminating some retirement benefits for new employees who begin work after July 1.
Last year, council approved its $19 million operating budget with a 2.6- mill increase in property taxes and a transfer from the fund balance of $307,225.
The tax hike added about $10 to a tax bill on a home valued at $100,000.
