Trouble spot on College Drive repaired
Motorists who regularly traverse College Drive might have become a bit concerned about a scary-looking dip in the street near the entrance to Limestone College.
The spot had become increasingly noticeable in recent days and had been forcing drivers to almost come to a complete stop before passing over the depression.
The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) dispatched work crews to the area Tuesday to repair the street. Excavation of the location was at one point eight feet deep while the pavement and decayed material underneath was removed.
Apparently the original pavement had been poured over the old trolley tracks that once were used to transport people and ore from Limestone Quarry to the downtown Five Points area. The rocks and other filler material that had been poured on top of the tracks had deteriorated, which caused the dip to develop.
The video here shows SCDOT employee Nathan Pierce operating a front end loader that is filling in the massive hole in the street while co-worker Neal Peeler (in the background) keeps a lookout for oncoming traffic.
