     FINGER LICKIN' — Blacksburg residents Paul and Danyel Mayes prepare their pork entry for Saturday's barbecue competition at the Blue Ridge BBQ & Music Festival in Tryon, N.C. The couple's Triple J barbecue team finished in the Top 20 in two categories — 15th in ribs and 16th in pork. The team was 22nd overall in chicken.

Police investigating more burglaries
11 were reported from last Friday to Tuesday
      The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office reported several additional burglaries last week in the wake of a very busy weekend of handling break-in calls. Four more burglaries were added to the police blotter last Wednesday and Thursday, while 11 were reported from last Friday to Tuesday.

County gives final approval to budget
      Chief Magistrate Bart Howell will be keeping his $5,500 professional allowance after all. County council had wanted to bring Howell's allowance more in line with the county's other elected officials, including clerk of court, auditor, treasurer and probate judge, who each receive an annual professional allowance of $600.

District passes balanced budget with help from sales tax revenue
      The Cherokee County School Board borrowed nearly $3 million Monday evening from a district building program fund to avoid a tax increase in the coming year's $62 million budget. School trustees voted unanimously to transfer $2.9 million in one cent sales tax money into the budget for the 2009-2010 school year.

     WATCH THE VIDEO — Limestone College alumni have donated money to replace all the brick pavement this summer from the Curtis Administration building to the main college entrance. Across the street, the State Department of Transportation is repairing a sink hole as part of a road improvement project on College Drive. City budget includes new fees
      Without debate, Gaffney City Council on Monday passed final reading of a $10.9 million budget that holds the line on taxes and contains no cost-of-living raise for city employees. The new budget goes into effect July 1. All the discussion on the budget occurred on first reading when a rancorous council cut a $3,000 travel allowance for Gaffney Mayor Henry Jolly.

      Voter registration for the Cherokee County School Board District 6 special election to be held July 28 will close Saturday, June 27, at noon. Go to the Voter Registration office, 1434 N. Limestone Street, Gaffney, if you need to register.

Fun on tap for 4th of July at Cowpens Battlefield
      Cowpens National Battlefield's summer schedule is full of free fun for the family. The reenacting unit of Continental Soldiers, 1st Maryland, Southern Campaign will have a living history encampment on June 20, July 4, August 1, and September 5. Re-enactors from the S.C. Rangers will set up a living history encampment and give musket and rifle firing demonstrations.

      SPARTANBURG - Rena Carter has been promoted to the newly created position of Social Services Coordinator for Hospice Care of South Carolina. In her new role, Carter will coordinate, develop, and maintain quality and evaluation systems for the Social Services Department of Hospice Care of South Carolina.

Home grown's all right with me, home grown's the way it should be
      That rotten spot on the bottom side of tomatoes is all too familiar to home vegetable growers. The same problem can be seen on melons, squash, and cucumbers, but is most often seen on tomatoes. Many growers feel they have a disease problem, but actually this condition is a mineral deficiency.

Signup now for parade, talent night
      The clock is ticking for groups interested in joining country music singer Kenneth Wright at this year's South Carolina Peach Festival parade. Parade entries are due by June 30. The festival plans to have floats, marching bands, shriners and winners from this year's beauty pageant participate in the parade. The parade will be Saturday, July 18 at 9 a.m.
