A SLED probe of a Gaffney man's death remained open Thursday, a week after the man collapsed and died during an arrest by Gaffney Police officers.

Omar Adams, 31, was pronounced dead at Upstate Carolina Medical Center a short time after he collapsed June 3 on Willow Street during an altercation with two officers. Police said Adams tried to run from the officers who were attempting to arrest him in connection with a domestic dispute. The probe of the incident was immediately turned over to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

An autopsy performed last week was inconclusive, Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler had said, and more tests were ordered.

Gaffney Police Chief Rick Turner said Thursday it was his understanding test results have not yet come back and that the investigation was ongoing.

SLED spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons confirmed the SLED investigation remains active.

The two Gaffney officers who responded to Willow Street on June 3 have not been identified.
