Seventh man pleads guilty in April 2008 home invasion
An 18-year-old Gaffney man on Wednesday became the seventh person to plead guilty for his involvement in a brutal home invasion on Providence Road in April 2008.
Kwame Douglas, 18, whose address is listed in court records as Bonner Lake Road, pleaded guilty before Circuit Court Judge Mark Hayes in Cherokee County General Sessions Court to charges of first degree burglary, second degree burglary, assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, kidnapping, grand larceny and common law robbery. Like four who previously pleaded guilty, prosecutors asked the court to defer sentencing on Douglas until all eight of the cases are resolved.
Seven of the eight men charged in connection with the April 2, 2008, incident have now pleaded guilty, leaving only the state's case against 18-year-old John Bonner remaining.
Bonner, who currently is held at the Cherokee County Detention Center, only recently was transferred back to South Carolina. He had been captured in North Carolina shortly after the April 2008 home invasion and was held there on drug offenses. Police allegedly found more than three-quarters of a kilogram of cocaine in the Concord, N.C., home where Bonner was captured.
Seventh Circuit Principal Deputy Solicitor Barry Barnette, who is prosecuting all eight cases, noted in court that Bonner's trial would be scheduled for later this year.
Only two of the seven men who have entered guilty pleas have been sentenced so far. Joshua Manning, 22, formerly of West Smith Street, was sentenced earlier this year by Judge Hayes to a total of 60 years imprisonment; while Labrontae Agnew, 18, formerly of Chandler Drive, was sentenced to a total of 30 years imprisonment.
The charges all stemmed from a home invasion on Providence Road and the subsequent break-in of an adjacent convenience store, the Corner Stop No. 2.
Barnette alleged in court that Bonner had been watching a female employee from the store transfer money every night from the store to an adjacent home and a plan was hatched to rob her.
On April 2, 2008, however, the woman didn't carry any money and the group allegedly decided to go in the home.
Barnette alleged that four of the eight men went into the woman's home, including Bonner, Manning, Agnew and Douglas. Gaffney Police investigators previously alleged that once inside the woman was held at gunpoint and knifepoint and assaulted while the robbers demanded to know were she kept the money.
After stealing the woman's keys, several of the men then went into the convenience store where they tripped an alarm.
Thousands of dollars were stolen during the incident and Barnette alleged the robbers split the money afterwards.
Douglas, who was allowed to remain free on bond until sentencing, was notified during Wednesday's hearings that he faces the possibility of lengthy prison time. The first degree burglary charge, for instance, carries a possible sentence of 15 years to life.
