STAFF REPORTS

A line of thunderstorms caused damage across Cherokee County on Thursday evening, prompting the opening of the Cherokee County Emergency Operations Center to handle the extra volume of calls.

Damage was still being assessed at press time.

Fallen trees and power lines blocked passage in numerous places, including Fortenberry Road, Burnt Gin Road, Highway 29, Wilkie Road, Beaver Dam Road, Baker Road and Old Racetrack Road, to name just a few. There was at least one report of a tree falling onto a residence.

Firefighters from numerous departments, including Gaffney Fire Department, Corinth Volunteer Fire Department and Goucher- White Plains Volunteer Fire Department, were responding to storm damage.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for southern Cherokee County that expired at 6:45 p.m. Thursday.
