New company gets 2-acre gift
A mystery company could bring 50 jobs to the Blacksburg area in the coming months.
Blacksburg Town Council voted unanimously during a special called meeting Thursday to donate two acres of property towards the state economic development project. The property was once used by the town for a wastewater treatment plant and is located off Highway 198 and Interstate 85.
Blacksburg Mayor David Hogue confirmed an unnamed company is interested in locating to the Blacksburg area. The proposed project would create 50 permanent jobs and an additional 300 construction jobs.
Hogue said the company has asked the town not to publicly discuss details on how the property will be used.
"Company officials have told me an announcement will be made by the end of the month. This is a potential multimillion dollar project," said Hogue, who has been involved in negotiations with the company for several months. "Although it's not in town, Cherokee County and the Blacksburg area will benefit from the development and the new jobs which are so important in today's economy."
The property donated by Blacksburg is located near a railroad trestle. There is no road frontage to the property.
"We will retain water line rights-ofway and are working out other details," Hogue said. "Town council had received another offer recently to buy the 2-acre property. When the council found out about this multimillion dollar project, they wanted to be a part of it."
