Juniors split twinbill
Photo by LARRY HILLIARD Post 109's Jared Mills advances safely into third base during the second game of Friday's twinbill with York. Uh-oh.
That was undoubtedly the reaction of the York American Legion junior team pitcher who was trying to protect a one-run lead with the bases loaded and only one out in the bottom of the fifth inning on Friday.
But he turned the uh-oh into the Oh Yeah! by striking out the next two Post 109 batters for a 2-1 victory and a split of the doubleheader.
York scored both of its runs in the fourth. The runs were both unearned.
Post 109 responded with a run in the bottom of the inning when Clay McKowen doubled and scored on Jonathan Smith's single.
Post 109 tried to rally in its last at bat by loading the bases and with the heart of the lineup due up. But Post 109 couldn't get the big hit.
"The York pitcher kept us off balance," Post 109 coach Travis Clary said.
Kaleb Earls started for Post 109 and went a solid 3 2/3 innings before giving way to Ryan Greene, who finished up.
Post 109 mustered just four hits.
In game one, it was Post 109's Bryon Munsterman who turned in a dominant pitching performance, tossing a one-hitter and striking out five.
Post 109 went on top with a run in the second on Smith's single, a wild pitch and a balk.
Post 109 tacked on four runs in the fourth. Grayson Goforth ignited the rally with a single before backto back walks to Ryan Frock and
Jared Mills loaded the bases. Greene followed with a 2-run single. The final run came home on a RBI groundout off the bat of McKowen.
Earls scored Post 109's final run in the fourth when he reached on an error, advanced into scoring position on Goforth's single and scored on Frock's fielder's choice.
Post 109, which is now 4-1, hosts Chester on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
