Post 109 nips Union, 10-9; stays perfect
Photo by LARRY HILLIARD Post 109's Bobby Jackson heads for third base during action earlier in the season. Post 109 travels to Cherryville today for a non-league game. It was only natural for Post 109's Corey Crissone to be a bit jittery in his first time on the mound this season.
But Crissone shook off the nerves and pitched three solid innings of middle relief to help Post 109 to a nerve-wracking 10-9 victory over improving Union on Monday.
Crissone struck out five to earn the victory.
"He was a little nervous but he settled down and pitched well for us," Post 109 coach Jeff Osment said. "He gave us exactly what we needed."
So did Jason Biershenck, who survived walking in a run in the ninth inning, to earn the save.
Post 109 jumped to a 6-2 lead but Union scored six unanswered runs to take an 8-6 lead.
Post 109 regained the momentum and the lead at 10-8 heading into the ninth.
That's when things got interesting. The first four Union batters in the ninth reached base but Biershenck fanned the next two to pitch out of the jam.
Ryan Westbrook was the hitting star for Post 109, going 4 for 5 with five RBIs and three runs scored.
Michael Hughey drove in two runs for Post 109, which improves to 7-0.
Osment said he wasn't surprised that Union battled down to the wire.
"Union is improving and getting better," he said.
Post 109 will travel to Cherryville today before hosting Greer on Thursday and Spartanburg on Friday.
