Benefit
The Cherokee County Detention Center will sponsor a benefit for cancer patient Sgt. Vera Holly on Saturday, June 27. A yard sale will begin at 7 a.m. and the hot dog sale will be from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. All proceeds will go to Mrs. Holly. The event will be in front of the Cherokee County Detention Center.
Fund raisers
Shriners will be selling hash on Thursday, June 25, at the Cherokee Shrine Club on Shrine Club Road. A pint of hash is $5 and five pints will be sold for $20. The sale starts at 10:30 a.m.
Holiday closings
Iron City Ministries in Blacksburg will be closed June 25 through July 5 and will reopen July 6.
The City of Gaffney Sanitation Department will observe Friday, July 3, as a holiday. That day's route will be picked up on Wednesday, July 1. Carts should be on the curbside by 7 a.m. July 1 for pick up.

Summer days are driftin' away, but ah those summer nights... Class reunions
Members of the Blacksburg High School Class of 1959 are planning a class reunion later this year. Anyone interested in helping plan this 50th year reunion is invited to attend a meeting on Tuesday, July 14, at 6 p.m. at the Agean Pizza on Floyd Baker Boulevard in Gaffney. Allen Temple C.M.E. Church will celebrate the third pastoral anniversary of Rev. Rosaleen Francis on Sunday, June 28, at 4 p.m. Speaker will be the Rev. Tony Thompson, pastor of the Tribes of Judea Church, Kings Mountain, N.C.
The Inspirational Choir of Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church will celebrate its 14th anniversary Sunday, July 28, at 4 p.m.
New Pleasant Baptist Church, 242 New Pleasant Road, will have its 11th annual Freedom Celebration on Saturday, July 4, beginning at 5:30 p.m. and ending with fireworks at 9:45 p.m. There will be a baking contest and anyone interested in participating should bring their entry to the church's Family Life Center by 5:15 p.m. that day. A prize will be awarded for the cake that is judged the best. The fun includes a bounce house, games (including water games), a slide, free food and a train. A musical, "God Bless the USA," will be presented.
The fourth annual Women's Conference at Limestone Missionary Baptist Church is set for Saturday, June 27, at 9 a.m. The theme is "Transitioning From Emotion to Devotion." Speakers will be Minister Juanita Dewberry, Bethel Baptist Church; Minister Julia Golden, Long Branch, Greenville; and First Lady and Minister Audrey Hailstock, New Day Baptist Church, Spartanburg. A continental breakfast and lunch will be served.
Mount Zion Baptist Church and the Rev. A.L. Brackett invite the public to their annual Men's Day program on Sunday, June 28. Guest speaker will be the Rev. Danny Burnside, pastor of Philadelphia Baptist Church.
