Will DeCamp Sossamon Hartzog

2009-06-26 / Obituaries

Will DeCamp Sossamon Hartzog was at home surrounded by her family in a circle of love as she passed Monday evening, June 22, 2009.

She was born April 21, 1924 to Will DeCamp and Frank Wilmore Sossamon.

Will was a member of Limestone Presbyterian Church, where she had served as president of Women of the Church and a Scout Den Mother.

She was a four-year cheerleader at Gaffney High School and attended Limestone College, where she was first baseman on the softball team. In 1944, she transferred to the University of South Carolina and became a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. In 1945, she was crowned USC's May Queen. She served as secretary /treasurer of the student body her senior year.

In June 1946 she married L.T. Hartzog. Will had been a successful realtor and together with her husband expanded Hartzog Jewelers to become Hartzog Gifts, Jewelers and Ladies Apparel. Together they ran the business until their retirement in 2004. Their store continues to operate today as Hartzog's under the same principles and values they established.

She is survived by her husband, L.T. Hartzog, and her four boys: Tommy and wife, Julie, Bobby and wife, Lizabeth, Rhett and wife, Cindy, and Charles and wife, Glenda; 13 grandchildren; four greatgrandchildren; a brother, Louis Sossamon; and a sister, Laura Turner.

Although she will be missed greatly, all who knew Will are comforted because of her strong faith in our loving and merciful Father. We know she will always be with us and will continue to be the biggest and most loyal Gamecock… and she might even have a little more pull… Go Cocks!

Services were held Wednesday, June 24, at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Russ Bradley officiating. Graveside services followed in Oakland Cemetery. The family received friends following the services at the home, 118 Hillside Drive.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in her name to Hospice of South Carolina, 1612 North Limestone Street, Gaffney, South Carolina 29340.
