Fortunately, it didn't need to in order to beat Spartanburg on Friday.

Ryan Westbrook went eight innings-plus before tiring and Bubba Wright socked a 2- run homer to help Post 109 improve to 9-0 in league play with an 11-8 victory.

"We have to have more focus," Gaffney coach Jeff Osment said.

With the postseason looming, Post 109 needs to hone its game in order to compete for a state title.

"We need to clean things up going into the last two weeks," Osment said. "We have to figure out what it will take to win the state tournament."

It'll take more solid pitching and defense. These were lacking in the ninth inning when Spartanburg scored three runs to make it interesting.

Westbrook was pulled after Post 28 put the first five batters on base in the ninth inning. Corey Crissone replaced Westbrook and walked two batters before retiring the side to end the game. The Indians committed a pair of errors in the the frame to help fuel the Spartanburg rally.

Bubba Wright Bubba Wright Spartanburg had 17 hits for the game.

"We just couldn't put them away," Osment said. "They kept on coming back."

Post 109 scored a pair of runs in each of the first three innings and added three more runs in the fifth to extend its lead to 9-4. Bubba Wright had the big hit in the inning — a 2-run homer over the center field wall.

Westbrook helped his own cause with three hits, including a double and triple.

Lee Gerwick had an RBI double.

Jacob Strehl, who was making his first start of the season, got the loss for Spartanburg.

John Mark Renfrow allowed two runs in his three innings of work.

Post 109 will host Inman today at 7 p.m. before traveling to Union for a 7 p.m. game on Tuesday.
